Claire Haines Yoga Instructor • Swim Coach • lululemon Ambassador, The Pen Centre Talk: How Slowing Down Made Me Faster Read bioMost people think getting better means training harder. For Claire Haines, the breakthrough came from slowing down. When she first stepped onto a yoga mat, she wasn’t training for a world championship — she was looking for a better way to manage anxiety, move, recover, and stay healthy. What she found changed far more than her flexibility. It reshaped how she trained, recovered, and responded to pressure, and helped propel her to become an elite HYROX athlete representing Team Canada at the HYROX World Championships. Claire is a yoga instructor, swim coach, and lululemon ambassador at The Pen Centre in St. Catharines, where she leads yoga classes and community wellness events while coaching athletes in swimming and endurance sport. On September 21, she will share how slowing down, breathing with intention, and moving mindfully became the foundation for greater strength, resilience, and performance — and why sometimes the fastest way forward is to slow down. |

Gavin Stephens Comedian & Solo Theatre Artist • Park Bench Ontology Talk: Childs Was Right: What John Carpenter’s The Thing Got Right About Collapse Read bioJust for Laughs once told Gavin they wanted a Canadian Chris Rock. He said no. He wasn’t asked back — but he has the résumé anyway: a Juno nomination, a Canadian Screen Award for writing, SXSW, the Hamilton Fringe, and a column at CBC Hamilton. What he makes now is Park Bench Ontology — stand-up, video essays, and theatre that take apart the ideological scaffolding of ordinary life and doesn’t put it back together. Today that means Becoming Carl Winslow, a solo show using the Family Matters character as a map for identity compression: how a Black man moves from “threatening” to harmless “sitcom dad,” on TV and off it. On September 21, he will share how a movie about a shape-shifting monster in the Antarctic can be seen as a framework for something less fictional: how marginalized communities get beta-tested for social and economic collapse first. |
